Depression is an abyss. An abyss with sharp, scintillating canines that can swallow you whole.

She knows about it because she had been devoured by it once. She has come a long way, and at most of the nights she feels proud of herself, but some nights the memory of it is strong enough to pierce her skin and shatter her once again. She was nine when her parents went separate ways.

She thought she could survive that, but what she didn't expect was that a dark, hollow abyss was waiting to engulf her just up the road.

Masooma has written a very beautiful and emotional story about a young woman's struggle through depression. The story alternates between diary entries where the narrator encounters her painful emotions and the circumstances surrounding her depression and the present day where the narrator reflects on how far she has come.

I loved so many things about this story but on a personal note, I have struggled with depression through my entire adult life and I could just relate to so much of it. Every once in awhile I would read a sentence that would bring tears to my eyes because I would think yes that is exactly what it's like. This story really captures those feelings of remembering how painful it is and the compassion you learn to have for yourself.

A very beautiful and touching story. I hope to read more from Masooma!

I love the writing style. How the metaphors made me feel 'in' with the character so easily. I can imagine it. You did fabulous job!! and I hope you write more stories.. I'm really looking forward to reading them.

It's been a long time since I read a short piece of writing with such eloquence and coherence. The form of writing that the author used has been a clever choice for tackling a storm of an issue which has always been swept under the rug by society. Well done!

I would like to congratulate Masooma for getting her book published. Blues is a story of mixed emotions, picked and arranged so artistically that it takes a reader to a journey, stopping them to many doom and gloom spots but telling them not stay there forever for that is not a destination. Dark nights eventually turn into a bright sunny day is what writer wants to tell to her readers, but also, she wanted her readers to feel pangs and pessimism that many of us feels in life and fight them with faith and good will and conquer all fears for life is what you make it. I personally loved the part where she writes about a butterfly and cocoon, so deep and so touching! looking forward to read more of her works! All the best to Masooma and Daastaan

WOW! I am truly, madly, irrevocably in love with the writer's eloquent writing! How she portrays the inner voice of a girl remarkably astute and equally brilliant. Her intuitive writing and elite plot made the story memorable. I loved how beautifully the writer sketched each sentence. This story will hit your heart and turn it into a puddle of emotions. You will feel the pain of the protagonist and sorrow right in your chest. And I love how the writer explores the much neglected predicament of our society.

A quietly constructed piece of literature that is so searing in its honesty and the integrity of its words that it can only deeply affect the reader and leave them longing to read more. I have read it a number of times by now and with each read there is always something new to touch my heart.

Brave, bold and beautiful.

It's written in a beautiful, poetic style and it highlights two of the most significant issues in Pakistani society; parental neglect/abuse and the ignorance regarding mental health problems. It gives a wonderful message of self-empowerment.

Felt every single word. Its so deep and full of emotions. There wasn't even a single point where I was distracted, I was just lost in the flow of this beautiful story. Loved the way the writer has beautifully highlighted the issue of mental illness and depression and solutions to cope with it. Way to go!!!
